A Legacy Cultivated Through Seasons

At Scheeringa Farms, our story is deeply rooted in family, growth, and the land we care for, but what makes us who we are today is how that legacy has evolved.

Our journey began generations ago, built on hard work, resilience, and a love for farming that has been passed down through the years. While our history is rich, we’re proud to say that Scheeringa Farms today is a women-owned, third-generation family farm, led by sisters Jeannine, Jennifer, and Janille...the faces you’ll see every time you visit.

After the passing of Farmer Bill in 1987, the farm continued under his son Don, and eventually into the hands of his three daughters. While the heart of the farm remains the same, the way we operate has grown alongside us. We’ve embraced innovation, expanded our offerings, and created a welcoming space that blends tradition with modern farming practices.

One of the most exciting transformations came in 2014, when we completed our current state-of-the-art 30,000 square foot, all-under-glass showroom greenhouse. This space allows us to grow and showcase our plants entirely indoors, offering customers easy access while giving our plants the ideal environment to thrive. With automatic watering, venting, and heating systems, our greenhouses allow us to grow stronger, healthier plants while extending our season and rotating crops more efficiently.

Today, we grow and nurture 95% of our flowers from seed to sale, a process we’re incredibly proud of. From hanging baskets and bedding plants to perennials, tropicals, and accent plants, everything is grown with care, intention, and a hands-on approach that hasn’t changed since the early days.

Our farm stand has grown as well, expanding from a simple roadside trailer into a permanent open-air market offering fresh, seasonal produce picked daily. We continue to partner with the same trusted family businesses year after year to bring in Michigan peaches, apples, and Honeycrisp apple cider when in season. You’ll also find local honey and a curated selection of salad dressings, marinades, and sauces that our customers return for time and time again.

In 2004, we expanded even further with the addition of a 4,200 square foot packing facility, allowing us to sell wholesale produce to restaurants and grocery stores throughout Northwest Indiana and the Chicagoland area. This temperature-controlled space enables us to grade and package a wide variety of vegetables , from peppers and heirloom tomatoes to cucumbers, squash, eggplant, and other specialty crops that we grow with care and consistency.

While the farm has grown, one thing remains unchanged: Scheeringa Farms is still built on personal care, family values, and a deep connection to our community. As women-owned farmers carrying on a multi-generation legacy, we’re proud of where we came from,  and even more excited about where we’re headed!

When you visit Scheeringa Farms, you’re not just supporting a local business,  you’re supporting a family, a tradition, and a farm that continues to grow with purpose!
